they were the first into space, that made them the leader and we had to play catch up very quickly.

note; to the folks that think that they were really close by being in Cuba. That wasn’t the closest the had several batteries set up in the Barron Straight Cuba 90 miles give or take a little bit Barron Straight about 50 miles. When you bring up nuclear armament remember that we had that first and all they were doing is playing catch up and why shouldn’t they we were both in a cold war and we had plenty. Where they really excelled was their space program. This still related back to the cold war as it was felt at that time who ever controlled space would be the controller of the world
