Question by Jared C: How is the medical field in Russia?
Are they short any any particular kind of doctor? How are their hospitals? What would an American doctor moving to Russia to practive be up against?

Im from Finland so im their Next door neighbour. Russia is a humangous size country. There is many things that dont work but also many things that does. They are trying to get better in every way. If they are going to get their selfs part of European Union they need to sharp up. Many people in there are poor, lack of medical care and doctors is huge. People in Russia are very friendly for foreigin people, they are open minded and full of love. Their hospitals need polishing, they are stuck in a 1960 s and for my opinion they need someone who has more novlege about medical culture at 2000 century. I think you would have a good change in there. But remeber that the culture is really different, language is really hard to learn. But i wish you luck, you can do it if you really want!! =)

Russia is enormous, it is tricky to tell for the whole country. The gap is huge: there are well-equipped, art-of-state clinics and centers in large cities and very poor rural hospitals. Many of the latter ones are short of all kind of doctors, because the salaries are meager and working conditions atrocious.
There are, though, numerous Western doctors practicing in various parts of Russia. Many of them face substantial difficulties because of the lack of supplies, language and cultural issues. But other found this expetience rewarding. It depends on your goals and plans. It helps to focus on a certain region/field of work and do your research based on that.
Otherwise it is like tryin' to figure out the average weather in the States :)))
Generally, if you go outside of Moscow and St. Petersburg, you'd better have charity and life experience as motivation. Another factor may sound cynical, but it is true: work in Russia is exceptionally good for surgical profs – military, abdominal, urgent, thoracic, orthopaedic etc. Because there you lay your hands on. There are (putting it mildly) far fewer limitations and restrictions on invasive practice.
