Before, during the Soviet days, all the best athletes were taken to be gymnasts or figure skaters.
Now, in the Post-Soviet times, people are much more free to leave and go to the West to play sports. Anna Kournikova was (is) pretty, a decent tennis player, and her sucess and popularity got a lot of Russian girls to pick up tennis rackets.
