Question by jK: If anyone read Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky?
If anybody’s familiar with the novel… does anyone know the significance of SONGS or SINGING in the novel?
Well there’s that and the many times that Katerina Ivavnova resort to singing, and the parts where Raskolnikov seems intrigued by singing in the taverns.

My favorite author! I’ve been re-reading the books I have, by Dostoevsky, during the past 50 years.
I don’t know about the word ‘significance’ but the ‘purpose’ of him using music and various sound-patterns in character speech was to add drama/suspense to his writing. I’m sure the acoustic value and modulation of the character’s speech, in Crime & Punishment, can be missed by some readers — I try to imagine this is a stage-play as that makes it easier for me to “hear” the tonality. If you’ve ever seen any old films, with Vincent Price, his voice is what I think of since he had the ability to capture what was in the present and indicate what was about to transpire. I think it’s mood music in another dimension.
