Question by mark: What were the WWII events that broke apart the alliance between Germany and Russia?
I know that Stalin and Hitler were allies at the beginning of the war and were still allies when Poland was invaded by both countries. But, soon after the Poland invasion, Germany invaded Russia. What happened to cause this rift?
The easy answer would be Hitler’s ambitions/greed but im more curious about the political or military events that occured between the Polish invasion and the Russian Invasion.

Hitler planned to invade from the start if Im not mistaken. Russia was too muc of a threat, and rather than risk them taking the Germans by surprise, They struck first.

Germany broke the non-aggression pact with Stalin and invaded Russia. Hitler was planning on this from the start, and Stalin knew this. The only reason Stalin signed the non-aggression pact was to buy time to build up his army

The Molotov – Ribbentrop was no more than a ruse conceived by Hitler to defend his Eastern front. By creating this pact with Russia to divide Poland the Russians were fooled into thinking the Germans were their allies. Germany had no intention of being allied with Russia. This pact left Germany the ability to leave a skeleton defense force in Poland and bring the rest of their army to fight on the Western Front in Europe. This strategy worked well as France fell in 6 weeks. The following year Hitler invaded Russia – The Nazi had a great hatred for the communists and Hitler felt they were sub human.
