Entering Russia

Entering Russia with one or two of your dogs is not a very complicated procedure. There is no quarantine, and you don’t need any import permit. Microchips for dogs are still not mandatory in Russia either. However, some veterinary documents are required.

Normally you will need a proof of a valid rabies and canine infectious diseases vaccination. Your dog must have been vaccinated within the last twelve months and at least one month prior to its arrival in Russia. You will also need a health certificate from a governmental veterinarian agency in your country.

It would be better if you provide your dog not with a local but with an international health certificate required by many airlines. The health certificate should be issued no more than ten days before your departure. Documents in English are acceptable for Russian authorities.

It is highly recommended that you travel to Russia on the same flight as your dog and avoid shipping your pet to Moscow as cargo. A dog arriving in Russia as cargo is unloaded at the separate cargo terminal, and you will lose a lot of time and additional money when clearing it through customs.

If you travel to Russia via a third country, make sure to find out what transit documents may be required. For example, in European Union countries you must provide a proof of your dog’s tick and de-worming treatment, and the dog must have a microchip.

Upon arrival in Russian airport you may be asked to register your dog at the airport’s veterinary station which will stamp and date your dog’s health certificate for 400 Rubles registration fee.

Pet Friendly Accommodation

When going to Russia think in advance where you will stay with your dog. It may take some time to find a pet friendly accommodation in many Russian cities because dogs are generally not allowed at traditional Russian hotels owned and operated by Russians.

The newer western style private hotels are more dogs friendly. In any case the best choice may be the international chain hotels like Hilton, Marriott, Novotel, and Holiday Inn, which are now widely present in Moscow, St. Petersburg and other major cities.

In smaller places you will probably have to rent an apartment from a private owner.

Travel In Russia

To travel in Russia by plane or train you will need the same dog’s health certificate stamped by airport’s veterinary station upon your arrival.

Veterinary Help

Most Russian cities have plenty of animal clinics and private veterinarians. Some of the animal clinics are quite large and have branches in several districts. Foreigners living in Russia usually get veterinary help at well-known Russian animal clinics like Belyi Klyk (White Fang), Bembi, Zoovet, and Center.
