Question by My Pham: To what extent did Mikhail Gorbachev cause the demise of communism in Euro and the soviet union?

Gorbachev only saw the demise of communism take place.. he accepted that and helped plan for the transition to a democratic system of government.
The demise of communism was mainly due to the success of western systems of democracy, caitalism and free enterprise. (Depending on what you perceive as success). The people within the soviet union control were basically fed up with having less than their counterparts in western europe and america.
The advances in technology meant people became more aware of this discprency and then the government began to lose its grip. Now there is one big happy government that pass laws affecting my life and the people who are doing it I didn't even have an opportunity to vote against… Viva democracy.
The police have effectively the same rights in my country as the notorious kgb did in the Soviet union.. Thanks to anti-terror laws.
and best of all anyone can move from impoverished eu states to more affluent states regardless of criminal record, skills, employment opportunities or even the ability to speak the native language.
Yes democracy has been a huge success we use more resources than we nned or the planet can sustain we entertain the masses to the point where they no longer care about the government or their actions and we produce huge amounts of waste and do nothing about it.
Well aparently communism doesn't work though I mean China is a pathetic nation really made no progress at all.
