US response if Russia bombs or invades Poland?

Question by RunLolaRun: How should US respond if Russia bombs or invades Poland?
Can the US handle confrontation on two fronts..ME and Russia?
According the the news Russia has just announced it is completely pulling out of NATO.
While not a member I thought they had SOME sort of military ties with NATO.

If Russia is dumb enough to do it, then it wont just be the US. It will be all of NATO that responds.

An attack on one, is an attack on all.

well, it's not straight forward as "bad guys fight good guys".

simple fact: right now the US operates about 200 interceptor missiles according to BBC. at least for the next 30 years russia is the only country in the world other than the US which is capable of a missile strike on that scale. iran and n. korea will do the trick not sooner than in 50 years. now the US want more missiles.

if the interceptor missiles are as efficient as bush claims, this gives the US an ability to launch a full scale nuclear strike with acceptable retaliation. no MAD. you still think these are peaceful protective missiles?

plus widespread lies about russia in free western media. take any site and see that 'russians are bloody demons killing everyone'. is it not propaganda to justify the strike from the US?

when cornered bears fight especially hard, trust me on that 🙂 in the past many have underestimated that capability of my people.

    good luck.

As a citizen of Poland I can tell you that since the "idea" of the shield appeared we have been hearing Russia's complains or- better say- menaces. We read it everyday in the newspapers 🙁
It is not only a matter of military attack – we are getting our gas and oil form Russia, and we cannot exist without it as we have no other suppliers /sources.
I would rather ask- what if Russia stops selling us gas and petrol? That will destroy us without 1 Russian soldier in our territory.
Will NATO or the US help us then?

Just to make it clear- I feel it was a good decision to agree on the shield, but I hope it will not cause us any troubles. There is too much bloodin our history. We want to feel secure and live in peace.

US would be obligated to respond militarily but, as someone mentioned above – it will be hardly any time to respond. We would be given less material to think than any Hollywood's movie-maker can imagine. Attack on Poland would be largely coordinated with fatal blow to the NATO army as whole around the globe. If the attack happen, most likely NATO commanders would be shouting commands to just knocked-down systems and already scorched personnel. According to what Russian military has and is very well train to do – the day we learn about the attack is going to be the day of NATO defeat to all fronts.

A military response unfortunately would be appropriate given our responsibility to our fellow Nato nations. I hope for every ones sake that it does not come to that

Look at the calendar – it is August 2008 – things changed rapidly from the standpoint of (majority) answers given above. If Russia strikes Poland it would be several coordinated attacks with Special Forces on selective but crucial targets. Most likely the so called NATO shield would be rendered useless in less than 24 hours. Secondly, USA has no mach to hit targets far enough, they have no counterpart for Russian supersonic missiles (sunburn) nor for their hypersonic (bramos). Russian new doctrine is proven not as search-and-destroy, but know-exactly where it is and destroy.
See, even today, looking documentaries I noticed how many times from ’45 to this very days in Iraq US soldiers would say over and over again: “I emptied few rounds (to retain confidence)” while it is well known that Russian soldier is trained as “One bullet, one life…”
According to answers above, seems people have not much about post Communist Russia. The indifference and arrogance may cost NATO and US direly. The right premise is would NATO be capable to do anything.

A Russian attack on Poland would be considered an attack on the entire military alliance of NATO. This would envoke Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty, meaning if you attack one the rest will come to help.

This would become the war of all wars.

Edit: Russia cut ties with NATO, correct. No Russia is not a NATO member, but they did have a coopertive agreement with NATO to try and better things throughout the world.

I don't believe Putan is so stupid as to attack a member of NATO. Such an attack would demand an immediate military response from ALL other NATO members.

I doubt Russia will attack Poland. Poland is part of the EU and NATO. An attack on one, is an attack on all. Simple as that.

Even if Russia is part of the SCO (Look it up on Wikipedia), China and Iran would not dare attack…yet. If they do, consider it WWIII.

Nothing, nada, zippo. Let it happen.
Oh, the Democrats would be the first to jump on doing something militarily, before they would quickly waffle and start protesting, nope, the hell with it, they would right now love to see the US in defeat in Iraq and Afghanistan, they book on it for political purposes.

If Russia foolishly attacks Poland, NATO must respond with military action (considering Poland is a member of NATO).

Actually we would have no choice on how to respond-military action would be required by the US and all other NATO countries in accordance with the NATO alliance; Poland is a member of NATO. Other EU countries would also probably join in as Poland is an EU member also. It would be difficult at first but the one thing is there are still more US troops in Europe at NATO bases then their are in the ME and the heavy equipment is mostly there also. If NATO or the US backed down and did nothing then might as well lower the flags and surrender now because the Russians would not stop. Current situation is about the same as 1930's Hitler and Germany being played by Putin and Russia and the response should be that we learned from Chamberlain that appeasement does not work and take the path Hitler forced by the invasion of Poland in 1939 did.

On our own? Not without the draft. They could always just reinstate it though. What we should really do if Russia invades Poland is speed up the withdraw from Iraq (but not just completely pull out over night) and send as many troops to Poland as we can while calling on our allies and every nation at the UN to help.

if russia bombs poland, i think we'll get involved. how can we not? this is almost exactly like when hitler took poland. poor poland is always in a bad position. they need to be stopped before it gets worse.
you're taking on nato? bring it, sunshine, i'll take you.

Russia knows it is a good time to make advancements with little confrontation, on the basis that the United States troop pool is already over stretched that we don't have excess to send on a moment's notice.
