The Russians came to the conclusion they couldn't function as a purely Communist state and didn't want to just convert to capitalism. Gorbachev started the ball rolling by instituting perestroika. Yeltsin was just the next phase of the communist's change to become more acceptable to the world and do business globally. Putin was selected by Yeltsin to succeed him and came from the KGB. Notice when he completed two terms he selected his replacement, Dimitry Medvedev, who then appointed Putin Prime Minister so he could keep operating.
This follows the pattern of China. They too realized that they couldn't keep going without capitalism and started it up while keeping communism as the governing function. The communists want to control the world, the American leftists want to control the world and the Muslin extremists want to control the world. It's a three way battle and it is just beginning.
