He was truly a man of great life force and energy.(and he smelled a bit too, I’ve read!) He was just one of many factors to bring the Tsar down, but not the main reason. Clearly, the Russian monarchy was out of touch and by 1917…out of time.

Absolutely not. The Tsar brought it down himself by oppressing his own people, forcing them to live and work under horrible conditions, and pandering to the aristocrats. Don't forget there was a revolution in 1905 before Rasputin arrived in the capital. It was because the people were dissatisfied. The Romanovs were responsible for the torture and slaughter of entire villages of Jews in raids called 'pogroms'. They wanted to exterminate the Jewish population. Rasputin never harmed nor killed a single soul and did everything he could to help the Jews who were denied civil rights.

My new book, "Rasputin and The Jews" (on Amazon) shows how Rasputin has been misrepresented for a century. It is an account of Rasputin as a healer, equal rights activist and man of God, and why he was so vilified by the aristocracy that their vicious rumors became accepted as history. A wealth of evidence shows that Rasputin was discredited by a fanatically anti-Semitic Russian society, for advocating equal rights for the severely oppressed Jewish population, as well as for promoting peace in a pro-war era. Testimony by his friends and enemies, from all social strata, provides a picture of a spiritual man who hated bigotry, inequity and violence. The author is the great-great niece of Aron Simanovitch, Rasputin's Jewish secretary.

Well, I would not say he was the downfall. There had been decades of discontent among the Russian people. Some main problems were:

1- HIM Czar Nicholas was not adept at politics and distanced himself form the average Russian.

2- WWI killed millions of soldiers and civilians.

3- Disparity in the Russian Empire and variety of ethnic groups was too much for the monarchy to hold on to without the help of a parliament.

4- HIM Czar Nicholas did eventually draft a constitution and start a parliament, but it was too little, too late. The Russians wanted swift reform, and the Czar did not deliver.

5- Rasputin was an advisor to HIM Czar Nicholas, but there were many others as well. Most could be argued to be totally inept as well.

He helped bring down the Russian Monarchy. But Czar Nicholas was inept and not very smart, while his wife was smart but crazy. They saw everything thru rose colored glasses. Also Russian coming into World War 1 didn't help, they didn't have the resources or weapons to fight a war like that.
