The Oracle says
Konstantin Stanislavski is one of the founding philosophers and practitioners on the current methods of acting for both stage and screen. There is a reason that Stanislavsky's system for acting is simply referred to as "The Method" or "Method" acting, and that is because it defines a process for an actor to create a convincing and realistic character… and does so in a way that facilitates success, time after time after time.
"Emotional memory" is my pick for the most important facet of Method acting. It connects the true emotions from within the actor with their role, and it what adds dimension and depth to an actor's portrayal of a character.
I agree with lixter: Stanislavsky is The Best. 🙂

yes! yes! yes! stanislavski is the best practitioner. i used his sytem during a term doing monologues and it helped me no end. the most important techniques i always use no matter what are ' given circumstances' and 'emotion memory'
these two are the main resources that build up our characters. need more info on this, come talk to me i know almost everything on him 🙂

Lee Strasberg at the The Actors Studio based his "Method Acting" techniques on the work of Constantin Stanislavsky. Basic method acting is "relaxation", "concentration" and "sense memory" (or emotional memory as another poster says).
In the end, method acting is a set of tools. Not every tool will work for every actor. I think you should research it and at least try the techniques and exercises. That way you can find what works for you.
