After seizing power Lenin and the Bolsheviks had a series of heated discussions on how to honour the promise to end Russia’s involvement in the war. Some thought that they should turn the war into a revolutionary war, exporting the revolution to Poland and, hopefully, Germany. Others thought that they should merely hold the lines – much as the Provisional Government had tried to do. And yet others thought that Russia should agree to withdraw, regardless of the cost, in order to consolidate the gains of the revolution.
Eventually Lenin settled on the final position, and the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk was signed. Fortunately for the Bolsheviks, the Treaty of Versailles (the Russians were not involved in this treaty) – signed only a few months afterwards – returned nearly all the lost territory to Russia, the Baltic States, Poland and Finland had their independence confirmed by Versailles.
