Historians debate a lot about him and there is lot we don’t know about him but most historians agree that killing of his family was entirely unjust and barbaric and he deserved a trial.

The Orthodox church later gave his family the status of martyrs, but most historians I’ve read on the subject are not very positive about his decisions. He was completely disconnected from the reality of the problems that his country faced and most of his decisions were simply to preserve his position as autocrat.

Antisemite, incapable to govern the country and ridiculously jealous to those capable prime-ministers he himself had appointed to govern the country. Stubborn and making lots mistakes in judgements.
His last mistake had cost the lives to all of his family. He had to send at least them to some safe place while he could do it (and he did have that chance). Then he could still be killed, but it would be his payment for his own mistakes. His own! Not his kids.
If he would be your manager, he would be one of the worst manager you ever had, unable to help when you need help, micromanaging when you can do the task yourself and always ready to fire you as a scapegoat for any problem.
But he was diligent, polite and personal brave (although not in politics).
