What are the best AK 47 for the money?

Question by maverick: I am looking into getting an AK 47 and was wondering what are the best ones for the money?
I have been looking around and notice the Romanian ones are cheaper and some of the reviews are a little skeptical. Should I save up for a Russian model? Are the Russian models any good? What should I look for when buying one?

You got your high ends and low ends when it comes to the AK47. You also have what is called a milled receiver and a stamped receiver. Now some people will swear by one receiver while others will swear by the other receiver. I own one of each and love them equally. Now moving on, Romanian rifles, especially the WASR10 is basically the bottom of the barrel when it comes to AKs. They also produce a decent model called the SAR1. I personally own a WASR10 which works great but would look into a SAR1 if you have the choice.

Anyhow, here is a small list of AK47s I would consider, Arsenal, Maddi, Norinco/Polytec, and STG-2000.

if you wouldnt mind one with a regular hunting stock and requires a quick modification to use normal mags you can get a saiga 7.62x39mm for $ 350, brand new, the stock can be replaced with a tapco one if you want a pistol grip, sadly there is no way to get it in the nice wood furniture that i know of

Russians cannot import semiauto military style weapons into the USA any more (thanks to Bill Clinton)

Of course, there is always the SAIGA a Russian AK that has been sporterized into a hunting rifle, and can be transformed back with a bit of work

Also, lots of 'parts kits' (AK dissembled, key component removed, sold as parts) from Russia (and elsewhere) are imported then with a few key components built from scratch, all the parts are added to make a complete gun. Of course not all assemblers/remanufacturers are of equal quality. Arsenal is considered the best…and the cost reflects that.

Arsenal, Saiga, and Krebbs Custom make some of the best semi-automatic AK-47's in the USA. They have high quality AK-47's made from a stamp or milled US made receiver but with the rest of the parts being of actual Russian manufacture.
