During the night of 25th October 1917 (Old Style Julian Calendar), when his forces seized the seat of the Provisional Government, the Winter Palace, Lenin was st the Smolny Institute, where the Second Supreme Soviet was meeting.
He had sneaked in, in disguise – wearing a cheap wig; he remained in his offices there until the Soviet met the next day. He waited until the Soviet was told about the seizure of power, the Soviet may have decided to back the Provisional Government and ordered his arrest. Once the Soviet backed the revolution, he took off his disguise and addressed the deputies.
His first proclamations were an immediate armistice “on all fronts,” transfer of land to peasant committees, workers’ control over production, the convocation of the Constituent Assembly, bread to the cities, and the right of self-determination to all nations inhabiting Russia.
He addressed the Soviet again in the evening of the 26th October to announce decrees on decrees on peace and land, and the formation of a new government.
