It was a radical revolutionary coup in St. Petersburg against the capitalist social-democratic government of Kerenskiy that had been in power since February of 1917. I doubt the bolsheviks "asked" anyone. Coupes happen without any notice as far as I know.

The most important thing Lenin promised was the end of exploitation of man by man. He promised the peasants and workers that they will become the masters of their own destiny instead of being exploited by landlords and capitalists.
Unfortunately, as a result of Lenin's activities, one form of exploitation was simply replaced by another form (an even more vicious form) of exploitation. After the Bolshevik Revolution the new ruling class has emerged – the government bureaucrats.

Bread, Peace, and Land.
Russia was losing the war against Germany and was suffering economically because of it. Ending war and getting food were primary concerns. Preserving Russia's land and helping the peasants get land from the nobles was also a big concern.
