~There were no death warrants and if you were on Joe's hit list, you didn't go to the Gulag, you went to the cemetery – or, more often, to a ditch in a field someplace but, that happened in broad daylight.
Mostly at night, Stalin was running back and forth to the bathroom because of his prostate problems, but, when he wasn't going, he was frequently coming with some Georgian babushka. During his early years, particularly in 1940 to 42, he was busy winning World War Two while FDR sat in his wheelchair trying to provoke the attack on Pearl Harbor so he could join in the fun and games. Of course, before the war, Stalin was busy turing the Soviet Union into the second most prolific economy on the globe and pulling his country out of the Romanov Middle Ages. You would have been able to say that in school in 1943 because he was an ally but you can't now because, Thanks to Ronny Raygun, he was the Darth Vadar of the Evil Empire. History doesn't lie. Learn a little about what he actually did, and concentrate on how the military purges resulted in Stalin winning at Stalingrad and almost singlehandedly defeating the Nazis (John Wayne and Audie Murphy notwithstanding). And if you want to concentrate on the purges and ignore all the good he achieved, be sure to compare his actions to the genocide campaign of the US Bureau of Indian Affairs and Millard Fillmore's concentration camps in Tenessee and Alabama.

Nights, Stalin loved to watch a Hollywood musical. The guy was a movie fan and the more schlock the better.
