I understand that they have natural gas and oil and russia doesn’t want them to be independent. What specifically is Russia doing to them?

Because Russia is a big bully that wants to hang onto Chechnya's natural resources, and as we have sen in years gone by, how the Russian military has hammered them with artillery shells, missiles and bombs. However i will stress that at the same time, i do not condone what the Chechen terrorists are doing in return.

I think you answered the question why Russia does not want them to become independent. You might ask what does the U.S. want by attacking Afghanistan. The same resources.
