What do the US and Russia do with nuclear arms after they sign treaties?

Question by Knowledge Is Power: What does the US and Russia(USSR) do with their nuclear arms after they sign the treaties to eliminate some?
Reagan and Gorbachev signed the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces treaty to eliminate a significant amount of each others nuclear arms. And since then there has been other such agreements. But what do they do with it? Throw it away?

They are deactivated and disassembled. Not sure what happens to the nuclear material.

    A good number were destroyed, then changed for use as vehicles for launching satellites, both military and civilian use. The warheads were dismantled and the material recycled for commercial use.

    They were dismantled and key components destroyed under supervision of inspectors from each country.
