What do you know about the Russian music industry?

Question by INNA: I want your opinion about the Russian music industry?
Honest opinion.
@K2010 yeah, I agree with the ‘corruption’. But what do Russians opine about the current pop music in general? Are they happy with the music industry?

I can’t say it’s ‘corrupted’. If this term can even be applied to such industry. It’s very monopolized, with all the following consequences.

Nothing interesting…

I’m astonished as a country with such a rich traditional heritage of exceptional music, that the Russian music industry is progressively abandoning their original music and resorting to “pop” music inspired by mainly American artists. Russia has a phenomenally great reputation of music and it somewhat bewilders me.

PS I don’t believe corruption is a contributing factor, its just the integration of mainstream music of popular youth culture and an eager generation of New Russians.

Hello guys. Well, actually the modern russian pop music really is monopolized and really is shit (Dima Bilan etc.) Almost every senior russian hates it, finding its lyrics very shallow. So the only people who listen to that TV shit are teenagers-girls or elder housewifes who turn on TVs of their boredom. (Senior russians actually listen to the music produced in the times they were young.) But actually Russia made a great impact into rock music (though nobody except russians knows about it). Of course almost all of this ended up in 90s (and began in 70s-80s), but still most of senior russians listen to this music or at least know it. I’ll just list the bands: Александр Башлачёв (Alexander Bashlachyov) – songs “Влажный блеск наших глаз”, “Абсолютный вахтёр”, “Все от винта”; Виктор Цой (Viktor Tsoy) – songs “Группа крови”, “Кончится лето”, “Звезда по имени Солнце”; ДДТ (DDT) (the most brilliant band in my opinion) – songs “В последнюю осень”, “Я зажёг в церквях все свечи”, “Метель”. There are actually lot of great russian bands – Аквариум, Наутилус Помпилиус, Сплин, Ундервуд – but I can’t describe here everything 😉

You can find everything on youtube.

That what you can see and listen on Russian TV and radio is not really worth any attention, because it reflects a state of deepest corruption and rule of unashamed clans in musical sphere. However not all is such bad. There is something interesting in musical clubs
