The Kornilov Affair was when the Tsarist Commander-in-Chief of the army – General Lars Kornilov marched an army on the capital Kerensky panicked and released the Bolsheviks, armed them and sent them to meet Kornilov. They succeeded in stopping the general, but the Bolsheviks were now armed, had political legitimacy, they were seen as the defenders of the revolution, whereas Kerensky and the Provisional Government seemed weak and like they wanted the Tsar back – the government had asked Kornilov to come to the capital.
