The importance of Moscow has been down rated by many, including Hitler himself. Aside from being the Soviet capital and center of government, Moscow was the industrial, rail, telephone and command center of Russia, a crucial logistical target. Stalin decided to stay in the city and plan its defenses instead of fleeing eastward to set up government elsewhere. Stalin understood the importance of Moscow and the moral effect of his nation's capital falling into enemy hands.
If Hoth's panzers had reached Moscow sooner, without the delays made from the attacks on Lenningrad and the Ukraine, the battle of Moscow would indeed have been won, but the war would've still been anyone's to win.
As it happened, after the Germans were beat back by the fresh Siberian divisions at the battle of Moscow, the fate of the war was still up for grabs. After Stalingrad a year later, the end was no longer in doubt.

Germany could have won over the USSR had they not considered the Russian as "untermenschen", "Slaven sind sklaven" when the Germans entered Ukraine they were welcomed as saviors and received with flowers, general Wrangel sided with the Germans and fought against the antichrist Bolchevicks the Ukrainians were Cossacks and anti Jewish and Hitler in his great wisdom sent them to Germany to work as slave labor while some of the other were sent to Babi Yar. After the war the Wrangel unit about 6,000 of them (if memory serves me right) were sent back to the USSR were Wrangel was hanged and those who were not ended in the salt mine and the gulags and some others yet joined the Gehlen org a spying thing funded by the US and located in perlach close to Munich, also when Hitler died Stalin supposedly said he was sorry about it and that together they could have acccomplished great things….
In 1973 in Bavaria there were the barracks of the green berets at Bad Tölz (the only g bees in Europe) which before that was the best SS school in Germany and in Bad Aibling was a NSA station who knew about the Yom Kippur war 7 days before it hapenned all close to Munich. I could write more but I don't want to write a book!

Greetings! That's an interesting one to ponder. Hitler probably would have taken Russia, but would have had a hard time holding it, because of it's immense size. Geographically, Canada, the second largest country in the world is just over half the size of Russia. And Germany, by contrast is about the size and shape of Wisconsin and Minnesota. This shows us how easy it would be for the Russian army to retreat to the east (all the way to the Pacific, if necessary) and then push back when Germany stretched itself too thin. So therefore, I don't think Germany could have won World War II by attempting to conquer Russia.
Now, if Hitler listened to his advisors and attacked the UK to complete submission BEFORE going after Russia, then it is conceivable that Hitler could have completely conquered Europe, and would draw itself to a standoff with the US, but it would be a matter of time before Germany would lose. Germany/Europe would not be able to keep up with the industries of the United States. And as I pointed out before, control of Russia would be a very difficult, if not impossible task due to it's immense size.
As far as Stalin leaving Moscow, he was deeply paranoid about his own lieutenants, so I don't figure Stalin hanging around if the Wehrmacht sacked Red Square.
Thanks for the question. Take care.

Stalin would have given up,but it may have provided a good chance for KGB's infiltration into German Army. And KGB would never give up even if stalin gaveup.

No – – – and knowing I will get massive thumbs down and perhaps reported I will say it yet again – – – HITLER WAS AN IDIOT – – – He was not a Military Genius – – – One can hardly get to Moscow without going through the Ukraine and actually securing the Ukraine was the least of Germany's Woes. Yes the Germans did get bogged down in Lennigrad and it could have been ignored. Yes with a little less stupidity Hitler's forces might have gotten into Moscow before Winter Set in. A big if since they started late in the season and were not provided with proper equipment. much of their strength having been disipated in campaigns in the Balklans and Greece.
I do not care how much Stalin may have 'loved' Moscow, after a heroic fight he would have retreated and carried on the War from wherever. Actually by retreating to the Port City on the White Sea that my dyslexia bars me from writing for fear of spelling error, starts with an M, Stalin would have been closer to supplies trickling in from the West. No Germany would not have won the war. They were bound to lose evenntually because HITLER WAS AN IDIOT.

Actually it was a three pronged attack. But they were stopped before they got to Moscow by the weather. Same thing that got Napolean's army.
What Hilter was after more than anything was the oil fields in the Ukraine and Romania because German did not have any oil. Germany was one giant dry hole when it came to oil.
Hilter needed the oil for his war machine and he did not trust Stalin so Hilter pulled the ole double cross on Stalin.
In known fact of history, right at the start Hilter and Stalin was allies. In fact Stalin was supplying Hilter with war materials he needed.
What is so ironic about the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union is that The German Panzer units passed trains headed for German loaded with war materials for Hilter's Panzers.
I think the better question would be What would have happened if Hilter had not double crossed Stalin and they's remained Allies through out WW II ?
