How would the cold war have changed if soviet leaders had not taken an aggressive stance with Afghanistan?
How might this impact Soviet relations with the west?

Well , Afghanistan basically bankrupt the soviet state. I think it was just a simple occupation gone wrong for the soviets. It turned into a Vietnam style war of attrition which increased disillusionment with the soviet leaders from the russian people. But the bankrupt part i think is the most important as it really weakened the soviet union and let the US become a super power

The US was already a superpower. But after 1980, we were the only superpower not in crisis.
