What is a good gift to a Russian host?

Question by Pedro: What is a good gift from and American to a Russian host?
Hello,

I will be traveling to Russian for an exchange program in a week, and I am looking for a gift to buy. My host is 16 and lives in St. Petersburg. I would also like to get something nice for his parents, since they are hosting me.

I am Mexican, so maybe something from Mexico might interest them?

Thanks.

Something Mexian is a great idea.
Also, jeans are easy to buy now, but I would suggest bringing t-shirts with something Mexican or American on them. They're fun to show off (especially for a high schooler), useful, and nice clothes are really expensive in st. petersburg.
And on a side note, I wouldn't suggest asking the family what they want – it might sound a little offensive, depending on how they take it.

    I'm with Natalia here –
Give them something Mexican. I think they will really like that.
Enjoy your trip – I have been there and it's an amazing place!

I think something Mexican would be great, because it's really difficult to find genuine American stuff.

PS: If you have any other questions regarding your coming trip, don't hesitate to send an email my way.

hmm…that's a great question. Can you get in touch with the family before you head out there and find out if there's anything they want you to bring them? Would that be weird?
We went to Croatia a few years ago, and my dad was able to find out that the people in the area we were in loved American baseball hats, so he brought a ton of those, and a bunch of NY stuff (they wanted I love NY things for some reason..) also, he brought some different food things for the adults, like fancy noodles, homemade jams and jellies, etc….when I was in highschool we had to do an email pen-pal type thing with a Russian highschool student..and they wanted us to send them jeans…but that was right after communisim fell..so it might be different now
    hope that helps!
