    Probably go to Red Square.
Prices for hotels, nightclubs etc will be more expensive on or around New Years Eve.
Try booking a hotel before you go by travel agent or by internet.

No offense, but open up the wallet. The prices are unbelievable during New Years eve. I was in Kharkov, Ukraine twice and I was in shock. They were asking me $ 400 USD for my wife and I just to enter the club. Drinks, food, etc was extra.
I took my wife to the New Year's fair in the center of Kharkov. We rode the horse drawn carriage all around. Rode the horses and took pictures. Rode on some rides.
Finally we bought a great bottle of champagne and celebrated New Year's Day alone.
