Question by Kris: What is the cheapest way to travel from Miami to Vladivostok, Russia?
I was thinking of taking a vaction in Russia- specifically in Vladivostok. Do you know the cheapest time of year to fly there? I have looked on-line at ticket prices and they have come back really expensive. For example, I have looked at flying in May from MIA to VVO and the prices are over $ 2,000. What are my options? I know there are ferries from Japan to Vladivostok. But how can I found out info about them on-line? Also, I could fly to a city such as Harbin, China and then take the railroad to Vladivostok, but you can only buy train tickets 45 days in advance. I don’t want to fly into Moscow and then take the Trans-Siberian railway to Vladivostok because then the trip would be way too long.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I don’t mind flying out of another U.S. city just as long as it is most cost efficient (for ex: after flying from my home town to that U.S. city it could end up being more expensive). And does anyone know if we have to pay to check in baggage on international flights?

The fall and winter are usually the best times to travel to Russia in general. If you’re going to Vladivostok, you’ll most likely go through Soeul, or, if you intend on taking the train to your final destination then Moscow or Harbin/China. However, as you’ve mentioned, time is a factor for you so you probably won’t be able to use those options.
If you decide you want to travel via Japan, you can go to Vladivostok by ferry from Fushiki, but the nearest airport that I know is Toyama (which is about an hour drive from Fushiki port). But, you’re not really going to save any money, because whatever you save in airfare you’ll make up for in taxi/ferry/train costs.
And the cheapest origin cities to Russia will be the major traffic hubs such as Los Angeles (LAX), New York (JFK), Newark (NWR), or Atlanta. And the cheapest carriers will be AirFrance/KLM via Schiphol, Aeroflot, Delta, or (if you’re going via Soeul) Korean Air.

Aeroflot is the main Russian airline and it's tickets are much cheaper. You can visit aeroflot.com and travel with a transfer to another plane if they don't have a straight line to Vladivostok. New York office of Aeroflot speaks English, you can call them.

Try visiting the aeroflot website. <a href="http://www.aeroflot.ru” target=”_blank”>www.aeroflot.ru The prices are often better if you buy direct from then rather than going to expedia or other similar online travel agencies. There is a back and forth flight from New York to Moscow at only 800 dollars, if you book about a month in advance. And from Moscow to VVO, there are plenty of local airline companies where you can buy for less. Back and forth would be about 600 dollars. It's seven days travel by train from Moscow to VVO. And it's twice more expensive than the plane ticket.
