Question by gmnastcsrocks: What is the point of Chekhov’s “Uncle Vanya”?
I just finished reading Uncle Vanya, and fail to understand the point of the play. Were there hidden messages or morals I missed? Or is it just a pointless production with a meaningless outcome? Answers soon please, it is much appreciated.

it might depend on what translation you read. I would suggest Curt Columbus for the best modern Chekhov translations. Ultimately I would suggest that the themes of Vanya revolve around the notion that you should not live your life in silent service of others, and that when you do, you more often than not find you have sacrificed your own life for someone who will never, or can never, repay you. And that having spent a life in service of others, when you do try to amend that behavior, the moment for your own life has passed, and you have nothing left but to return to your sacrifical ways.
