I recommend leaving your dollars at home and just using an ATM machine in Russia. They can be found easily, just like in the U.S. Check first with your back to make sure that you can withdraw money from foreign ATMs, but most banks do. It is a lot easier, and in most cases, cheaper than using currency exchanges.
I am an American living in Novosibirsk, Russia and have traveled to Moscow and St. Petersburg. A cup of coffee and a cafe costs about the same as it does in the US at Starbucks $ 3-5. Eating at a restaurant is around $ 10-15 per person, but if you want to save money, buy food in a grocery store. If you are brave enough to maneuver public transportation, you can also save a lot of money over taking taxis.

Much depends on where you are going to in Russia.
moscow is expensive, and do expect to pay between $ 100 and $ 300 per night for hotel accomodation depending on the hotel.
Decent hotel is the Marco Polo.( good but not a high class hotel ) reasonable priced are the hotels at Izhmailovo ( partisan square )
Coffee is same as anywhere in places such as starrbucks.
macdonalds is priced about the same as anywhere.
check out the hungry duck pub for eating out,( british owners )
