Stalin and Trotsky represented opposite directions for Communism. But while Trotsky used the mighty pen, Stalin implemented communist policies that were exceedingly costly both in lives, and in depriving the Soviet people from freedom.
Trotsky used his writings to oppose Stalin, and to establish an alternative direction for communism, and his followers became known as Trotskyists. While Stalin was struggling with practical problems in the Soviet Union, the Trotskyists were fighting for class equality between intellectuals and capitalists.
Trotsky was a key figure in the Bolshevik seizure of power in Russia, second only to Lenin in the early stage of Soviet communist rule.

Leon Trotsky was the right hand man of Lenin who took Russia out of the war.

He was a major leader of the socialist peace movement. He advocated peace without conquerors or the vanquished. This conflicted with Lenin's stance for the defeat of Russia. He moved around Europe during the war getting into trouble with various countries for his peace stance. He was in USA when the Czar was overthrown. He went back to Russia where he was second only to Lenin during the Bolshevik Revolution.
