Question by : What level (standard, grade) is Prokofiev’s sonata in D Major for flute?
I would like to play Prokofiev’s Sonata in D-Major For flute and Piano (Op. 94).
It seems quite hard and I was asked to find a piece for grade 7 or 8 (I am past that, Im 14). And I am just wondering.
Any ideas?
I would be grateful for any topic-related answers 😉

I am a NYSSMA All-State judge for woodwinds, and the Prok is a Level 6 in NY – that is as high as we go. However, these lists are for STUDENTS – there is far tougher literature out there – not to take anything away form the Prok, which is difficult and a GREAT work – I have performed it often, and love it.
If you want the BEST listing of flute literature, graded, then go to www.nfaonline.org, and buy the booklet that lists tons of flute literature, graded a through K.
Added- if your teacher has the OLD edition kicking around – then please buy the NEWER one.

The Prokofiev is very difficult. I can’t imagine many high school students having the musicality, technique, sound, control, and colors to handle this piece…. I played it as an upperclassman in college, and am glad I waited that long to learn it. Could I have played the notes before then with some sense of dynamics? Yes. Would I have butchered it musically? Yes.
