Question by Hello: What Middle Eastern Nations were under Soviet Control prior to the fall of the Soviet Union?
Does anyone know where I can find a list? I am writing a paper and am trying to include scholarly citations. I am writing about how the fall of the Soviet Union, and American imperialism is responsible for the bad situation in the middle east. (Financially and politically)

None. The Soviets supplied weaponry to Egypt, Syria and Iraq but these states were not under the “control” of the Soviets.

I can only tell you that Imperialism is responsible for not only the bad situation in the middle east but the whole of the developing world. Check this site out.

Apparently no one knows their history. Russia controlled most of the 'stans and a bit of northern Mongolia. They made inroads into the Caucasus region as well. They also held a military, economic, and political stranglehold on, first the Ottoman Empire, then later Turkey.

There was temporary soviet occupation in Afghanistan, but they withdrawed.

Southern Yemen.
Mr. Spiffy: most of those countries aren't in the Middle East, and Turkey was a NATO member and was NOT a puppet of the Soviets at all.
