I'd advice you to visit Novgorod – one of the most old Russian cities and one of the mosr powerful cities of the medieval russian regions. It has its own ancient Kremlin. 🙂 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Velikiy_Novgorod
And near SPb there is Staraya Ladoga – the first Russian capital. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staraya_Ladoga
Vyborg – the patrimony of Swedish knights. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vyborg
EDIT: I've been to all these places not once and just really like them. Karelia has an amazing nature but it's a bit hard to get there.
And also there is an island Kizhi in Ladoga that has an extremly interesting open-air museum consists of wooden building made without iron nails in the traditional Russian style http://kizhi.karelia.ru/info/

Too bad you'll be there in May because Velikiy Novgorod will be having a major all-Russia celebration of its 1150 birthday in June of 2009!

Nizhni-Novogorod, Vieliki Novgorod, and the Zalotoio Koltzo
aka "Golden Ring" a bunch of great cities in a circle of 250 kms average around Moscow – Sergei Posad – Vladimir – Suzdal – Rostov Vieliki – Kostroma – Iaroslavl –
i was in vieliki Novgorod in 2004- Splendid Kreml and Sainte Sophie's cathedral -The most difficult is to get there- Have a plane unto Peterburg-Pulkovo – then make a deal with your hotel in Novgorod – Inturist Hotel accepted it at that time – then they send you a chauffeur and take you back – about 130 miles –
Priviet to vsie Novgorodski – the park wth the self-service open-air bar is great – this is the place where all local beauties gather on fine spring-summer saturday nights.
