Question by Kris10: What part of Russia is desolate, but also somewhat close to Moscow?
I am writing a book and I need to have a location in Russia where my protagonist is taken and held captive. I want this place to be a real place in Russia, though i will change the name, I still want the actual place to exist. It needs to be around Moscow where the character attends an American college. Also I would also like to know what apartments are called in Russia. I know some countries have different names like flat and Stet.

Vologda is pretty good. basically no one knows about it, and i have been there many times. Its a day by train. Apartments are called “Kvartira” in singular, “Kvartiras” in plural. You can just call it a flat, thats all they are.
