What Russian foods would you recommend me to cook?

Question by Play With Fire: Russians: What Russian foods do you recommend me to cook?
Privet!

Today, I just cooked some Russian food for my family and they really liked and would like to try more Russian foods. I was wondering, do you have any good recipes that you recommend for me to cook?

I’ve heard Russians eat Poles.

Here’s a simple Russian meal for you to make:
Olivie Salad
Plof (rice and meat dish)
Blinchiki with Tvorog (I think tvorog is cottage cheese) for snack. Or just plain blinchiki that you can have with jam or syrup.

These are all pretty simple to make, and there are many many recipes on the Internet. Just google how to make them.

Russian cuisine is very wide and very tasty. Russians have their own traditional soups, salads, main dishes and deserts.
The most famous cold soup is cold “akroshka” ( окрошка). This soup is usually cooked in summer and it is based on Russian “Kvas” (квас – drink made from bread). There must be two sorts of vegetables in okroshka. The first must have a neutral taste, such as boiled potatoes, turnips, rutabagas, carrots, or fresh cucumbers. The second must be spicy, consisting of mainly green onion as well as other herbs—greens of dill, parsley, chervil, celery, or tarragon. You can use different types of meat in your soup. Usually Russian use beef or fish. You can buy Kvas in every Russian store.

One of the most famous soups is “Borsch” (Борщ). Borsch is made of broth, beets and tomato juice with different vegetables. Vegetables can be onions, cabbages, tomatos, carrots, and celery. Usually Borscht contains beef or sausages but it also can be made vegan. It can be served hot or cold. Typically, it is served with white bread and Smetana ( sour cream).

The most important salad on Russian table is salad called “Olivje”(Оливье). Olivje salad: a mayonnaise-based potato salad distinguished by its diced texture and the contrasting flavors of pickles, capers, olives, hard-boiled eggs, and peas.

Traditional Russian meat dish is called Pyel’meni (пельмени) but it’s very hard to make them at home so usually Russians buy them in a store. You can find pyelmeni in every Russian Store.

A very easy to make, fairly inexpensive
    it is called “kasha”
Buy a box of Wolff’s buckwheat (13 oz) it can be found in supermarket by rice aisle
It is a 100% Pure roasted Whole grain, low in sodium, low fat, no cholesterol product high in vitamins and fibers. Recipe is on the back, it is pretty easy (just a tip, cook it a bit longer to make it more fluffy), when done, add butter or olive oil or anything you like..
Could be eaten as a whole meal in the morning, daytime with meat or wo/out with vegetables, some like it with white cheese. or anyway you would have eaten rice.
Price went up recently, it would cost you around $ 4.00,

    Bon appetite.

    Start with beef-stroganoff.
You can try to cook borscht, herring salad (if you like), or pierogis.
