I’ve only read Anna Karenina. I didn’t love it, but i have to admit it was very well written.
I recommend it though. It was just a little too soap opera-y for my tastes.

The Girl Who Played with Fire (Vintage)
I am not a fiction reader but enjoyed the first book of this series so much I thought I'd give The Girl Who Played With Fire a chance. Wow ! I thought it was even better than the first book. http://www.amazon.com/Girl-Who-Played-Fire-Vintag…

War and Peace is probably the most famous of his works, but that's a monster (nearly 1500 pages!).
I suggest starting out with The Death of Ivan Ilyich. It's a novella, so it's not that long, and it's a good way to see what Tolstoy is like.
