RC says
Sputnik 1 had no payload. It was an aluminum sphere with multiple antennae that sent out a monotonous radio signal: Beep…..Beep…..Beep…..Beep…..Beep . Over and Over.

Sputnik 1 weighed 183 pounds. This consisted of an aluminum sphere with a radio transmitter and antennas, with a gadget that determined the on board temperature and modulated the radio signal (a 0.3 second on and off beep) according to the temperature.
The first recorded broadcast of this beep in the USA was by radio station WKCR-fm in New York City, the night of October 4, 1957. The next morning the FBI came to the station and stole the tape (well, they never paid for, returned or replaced the tape–that's stealing in my book)
