Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia became more westernized and adopted many cultural institutions of the United States and Western European countries (i.e., music, fashion, beliefs, etc). With all the freedom that came with democracy, Russia became a nation with many prosperous people; however, there was definitely a negative side to the capitalist development.
With the fall of communism, crime was widespread, and the cities lost their safe reputation. When communism was in effect, Russia was a state controlled by the police and military, so the majority of Russians did not cause trouble. As time progresses, the police are gaining control over the chaos, but it is rather difficult since the people have embraced freedom and attempt to abandon the unfair laws, which constitute communism and government control.
Overall, Russian culture has maintained the traditions of Old Russia, since the country has matryoshka dolls (nesting dolls) and various customs practiced before the communist regime. The Eastern European country is also retaining most of its religious practices, which were almost lost through Stalinism. Churches and cathedrals are open to the public and perform the Eastern Orthodox religion, as the have for centuries (except during the Soviet Union).
When the collapse of the Soviet Union happened on December 25, 1991, all that really changed were the political elements and governement, since the country became capitalist, through Mikhail Gorbachev's propositions of glasnost and perestroika.
I hope this helps, and I wish you luck with your report. =]

We became more influenced by Western and especially American culture. Most of the movies we watch, music we listen to, books we read, clothes we wear, stuff we eat either comes directly from America or is heavily influenced by it.
