The Russian Economy was absolutely destroyed and horribly inflated. The breakup of the Soviet Union was a very turbulent time, and because the countries split, so did the economy. Eventually, under Putin, the ruble acquired some more value. Even today it’s pretty worthless (about 27 rubles for 1 dollar), with an 8.3% inflation. 1 RUB in 1998, however, was worth 1000 RUR (Currency of Russia from the breakup of the Soviet Union until 1998). To summarize, the economy was a disaster.
