What was Yeltsin’s “shock therapy”?

Question by blahblah: Yeltsin’s “shock therapy”?
What was Yeltsin’s “shock therapy” and what effects did it have on Russian politics?

It was the process of privatizing state owned enterprises very rapidly after the collapse of the Soviet Union. It was an absolute disaster for the population generally that resulted in a very small number of very corrupt people becoming very rich, very quickly- the Russian oligarchs we know today. There were Americans in Russia assisting with the process at the time, and to this day many Russians see it as US sponsored sabotage of Russia.
