The Russians invaded Dec. 1979 in a big surprise invasion that shocked everyone. They got bogged down fighting Afghan Muslim rebels (mostly because the US was funding and arming the rebels). Fighting eased off 1988 and the Soviets were out by Feb. 1989. The winning rebels then fought amongst themselves starting 1989 until the Taliban won most of the country 1996.
