Well, I don't own an AK74 yet, but I do own an AK47. Now as far as I can tell, the only real difference between the 47 and the 74 is the caliber. The AK47 and all of it's brethren are chambered in 7.62×39, and the AK74 and it's variations are chambered in the much smaller 5.45×39. Everything else seems to be pretty much the same. In fact I have a 74 muzzle break on my 47 right now, so the barrel threads are even the same!
Hope that helps!

different ammo and the ak74u is shorter and has a folding stock
Johnny says
1 the ammo is different.
Ak-47 uses 7.62x39mm ammo and the Ak-74 uses 5.45x39mm ammo.
the ak-47 uses a 32 cal bullet and the ak-74 use a bullet slightly smaller then a .22
#2 the ak-47 has greater recoil then the ak-74 witch mean the ak-47 32 cal bullet has greater stopping power!

about 27 years of technilogical advancement:
the AK47 being engineered in 1947 and the 74u in 1974

You're asking a very broad question here.
The AK-47 is the Ak-74u's grand father. ( The Ak-47 led to the AKM then to AK-74 )
Your major differences with be Ammo, the changed made between the ak 47 and the akm that carried over to the ak-74, and the over all size of the rifle.
The AK-47 is a full sized military rifle, as opposed to the Ak-74u variant which is cut down closer to the size of sub-machine pistol. Those will be the differences you see and feel. The ak-74u also sports a chrome lined barrel which increases barrel life, as opposed to the ak-47 which originally didn't.
The thing with these rifles is you have to understand there are hundreds of manufacturers who made there own style based on what they wanted and needed. There will be tiny differences through out it history and even from year to year of the same firearm.
