What’s the Difference between Russia and Siberia?

Question by Mabius: The Difference between Russia and Siberia?
Would anyone be willing to help me understand the difference in Russia and Siberia? Is this like how Canada and the US are both North America or what?

‘Russia’ is the term applied for the country that is almost the eastern half of Europe. That is if you define Europe as west of Ural mountains. So originally this is the country lying between ‘White’ and ‘Black’ Seas; from Kanin’s nose (White Sea) in the north to Tongue of Arabat on the Sea of Azov (an arm of Black Sea) in the south.
But Russians have always held areas east of Urals that is geographically Asia. Successive Russian Empires till the USSR (of which ‘Russia’ or ‘Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic’ is a constituent) have the area from Urals to the Pacific Ocean (Sea of Okhotsk) as part of their country. That part from Urals to the Pacific, as big as Canada, the second largest country in the world is ‘Siberia’. So, Siberia (Northern quarter of Asia) is part of ‘Russian federation’ as is known now. There are many peoples (nationalities) within Siberia including the island of Sakhalin, though ‘Siberia’ as a name is used by western countries only. These nationalities are ethnically very different from Russians and of Mongol-Tartar stock. Akira Kurosawa’s movie ‘Dersu Uzala’ is an educative movie on the Siberian people. Siberia and Russia boast of the longest railway line (about 6000 miles) and train-journey in the world.

Russia is a country, formerly called the Russian Federation. Siberia is a region in that country.

The comparison would be that the Midwest is a region in USA.

The Siberian Federal District is an administrative unit in the Russian Federation. It’s territory is only a part of the Siberian region. The comparison here is that Kansas is a State in the Midwest Region of the USA.

Siberia is a geographic region within Russia. It stretches from the Ural mountains in the West almost to the Pacific ocean in the East.
Siberia to Russia is like The South to the US. The people are very proud to call themselves Siberians. They have their distinct culture and speak their own language dialects.
