Accepting the authority of the pope is really the only important difference. This is why the chance for a reunification of the Catholic and Orthodox Church is likely at some point.

My understanding was the Russian Orthodox was a bit too chummy with the monarch, to such a degree that they practically taught that the Czar was divine, imposing the divinity of Christ on "Caesar" (the Czar), if you will.
I understand that this has been the political contention between the Cath and Orthodox in several regions. As you can imagine, the Ortho was allowed to flourish in Russia, and the Cath Church wasn't. This tendency of the Ortho's to be too close for comfort with the governing authorities has always been a source of strife between Catholic and so-called "orthodox."
