True vodka is spirits while schnapps is a brandy. Schnapps starts of as a product of the grape, while there is nothing of the grape in vodka. To us affictionados, flavored vodka is a drink of the young, inexperienced and foolish. It’s phony. It’s fake. It’s adulterated. It’s an insult.

schnapps is part of a group of beverages called LIQUEURS.
Liqueurs are flavored and usually sweetened.
When you add straight liquor to a mixer, it usually drowns out the flavors, because liquor is so bland. It’s kind of like adding water. Liqueurs do the exact opposite by adding flavors, because they’re usually very strong tasting, and some of them are very sweet. Liqueurs also have about 17% alcohol so the level of alcohol stays consistent in the drinks you’re adding them to.
Flavored vodkas, rums, etc. sort of bridged the gap for consumers. Instead of having to buy a bottle of liquor, a mixer, and a liqueur to make a good drink, now all you need is a flavored rum or vodka, plus a mixer.
Some popular drinks that fall under the category of liqueurs are:
Bailey’s Irish Cream
Jaegermeister
Puckers
Kahlua

But schnapps is very sweet and sirupy and vodka isn’t. You can flavor anything, oil, vinegar, vegetables. But in the end its about consistency and flavor. Vodka has a different purpose than schnapps. Maybe the real difference between the two is the alcohol percentage and its easier to drink schnapps straight than vodka(the sugar masks the alcohol).
