He survived the Gulag (by chance). He memorised the stories he was told in prison – by setting them to poetry! Then he spent the rest of his "free" life creating a memorial/history of Stalin's outrages. He was a Russian nationalist who accepted exile as the cost of telling the truth and who found the West decadent, complacent, indifferent. He tried to warn us that what we had needed positive defense…..now look at us.
