America isn't afraid of Russia.
America is far to powerful to have true partners and Russia is still in a cold war mindset and distrusts everything america does.

As time goes by in history, we see more countries splitting off from each other, more countries going independent, and less political alignment.
Leaders speak of cooperation and loyalty, but really a lot of the treaties are based on economic benefits. If we give money and aid to a country, they are temporarily our friend.
Russia and America understand their place as super powers and would not really give that power up to become bosom buddies. Neither would China, as they arise as the third great super nation.
Our leaders are from time to time terrible men who make awful decisions, and so it is with every country. Why make an alliance with another mega-nation if the next four years could bring an evil leader or an idiot? I'm afraid that while we may not hate each other, we will not ever become too close with either Russia or China.

it's possible, but a lot of people still have their reserves about Russia's past governments, and even believe that it still plays a big role in Russia's current government. It is a general fear that if we do become partners, we will influence each other for the worst. I would like to see it happen though, but only if the US was economically strong and governmental stable along with Russia. if it happens when both are stable superpowers, than the chances of influencing each other in any negative way is almost none, due to the approval of the governments and procedures by there own people. In other words, there would be no reason to search out new forms.
