Question by Robert W: When is a good time to visit the summer gardens in St Petersburg?
I am hoping to visit St Petersburg in April and would like to see the summer gardens. I have heard that in the winter many of the statues are boarded up, will this still be the case at this time of year? Thanks

I guess you are asking about the Summer Garden on the Field of Mars. It is a beautiful place in summer, when trees have leaves and flowers are in bloom. April is too early, but you might be lucky to have a beautiful spring weather. Regarding statues, they are kept in enclosures in winter and early spring. It depends on the weather conditions when they open them up. Regardless of this, Saint Petersburg has so much more to offer. You will enjoy it in April. It’s right before tourist season starts, so airlines offer deals on air fares and hotels has low season rates in effect.
The article MaxVO2 is pointing to: http://www.fontanka.ru/2009/01/29/082/ does talk about the Summer Gardens reconstruction, however they will be taking a decision regarding construction contractor bids in March, if it goes as planned. Or it might be even later, so in April you will still be able to see it!!!
What do you think? Answer below!

The Summer Garden in St.Petersburg will be completely SHUT DOWN for 2 years for a grand and spectacular makeover. The work will start sometime this year, so you may not be able to see it at all in 2009.

Anytime as it's such a wonderful city to visit, but of course the long summer days are perfect. Look at this: http://www.saint-petersburg.com/

Yes they are still boarded up in april, and the fountains are still dry. I'm not sure exactly when they open though so its possible at the end of April. BTW, it does snow there in April still.
