The Kremlin (fortress) contains many church buildings, the grandest built in the church style favored by the Russian Orthodox state religion.

The golden onion-style dome is meant to evoke a candle, a sign of worship. Although Moscow was under Mongol rule when the Kremlin's building started, its style is Russ, and that in turn derives from an older Byzantine Orthodox style. Kiev was the oldest seat of Russ govt, and there the conversion to Orthodoxy occurred, allegedly after a careful comparison of Christian, Islam, and Jewish religions. The Russian alphabet was itself transcribed by Byzantine scholars.
