Question by Oliander T: Where did the Volga Germans originally come from?
My ancestors were Volga Germans, Germans who emigrated to Russia sometime in the 1800’s, and then later to the US. I was wondering if the Volga Germans who settled in Russia were from any particular part of Germany or if they were from all over.

To add to the good answer from Paul, if you are interested in learning more about the Volga Germans or Germans from Russia, you will find a number of links to related web sites through a list of genealogy references on Cyndi’s List, here:
http://www.cyndislist.com/germans-from-russia
Also, if you call your local public library and ask where the main library collection of genealogy resources is located (probably the main/headquarters branch of the library system) and find out the hours of service, you can go there and start researching with what the library holds. Altho’ a lot of good genealogy info is available “on the web.” not all of it is. This is especially true when one is researching family lines where English is not the language. How’s your German and your ability to read old German script, for example? A librarian in the genealogy section can help you work through how to best conduct your genealogy research.
Plus, the library will probably have info about the local genealogy association and if there are any others in the area who have some expertise in researching Volga Germans/Germans from Russia.
Best wishes and happy researching your family history

In an effort to reach Historians, Archivists & Editors be advised of the following background information.
I am in possession of a set of original Volga German journals dating from the revolutionary period. These have been partially translated, more then 600 pages still to be translated & transcribed from the artistic German scripted form.
Trafford published a book, The Quiet in the Land, by Henry Wieler, from a portion of the journals. Do refer to Trafford's listing for details. I can send you a copy at my cost upon request.
Due to health reasons I am not able to proceed with this unique historic work & am seeking alternatives.
Since you have experience in this field, I would like to share additional details through a phone call at 717-293-8141.
