We haven’t gone beyond low-earth orbit since we went to the moon because it’s incredibly expensive to go to the moon, and we didn’t want to spend the money to develop ways to stay for extended periods.

As far as “what orbit” Gagarin was in, his orbit had a low point (perigee) of 169km, and a high point (apogee) of 327. The orbit was inclined about 65 degrees to the equator.
